Morocco

July 31, 2023

This wonderful country is a hotspot for many tourists travelling around North Africa. To be completely honest, I thought I would enjoy it more than I actually did. The reason being, a lot of the cities have a lot of tourism traps and it felt very superficial when doing some of the activities. I landed in Casablanca and enjoyed the history and exploring the landscape in that city. From there I headed to Rabat, the Capital. It was cool to check out and I loved the ocean waters hitting the city walls. The country was very clean and noticed a lot of tourists exploring the various historic landmarks.

From there I headed to Fes, and spent some time in the old city walls which was also cool to explore.  From there I headed to Marrakesh and spent most of my remaining time there.   There was a lot of scamming going on there, specially set up for tourists inside the city walls. Keep in mind I went during a time, where Covid-19 restrictions where just lifted from Morocco and hence a lot of people were eager to make some money.  I even got hustled getting a haircut since the barber was trying to charge me significantly more than the posted price.  But overall, the nightlife was just beginning to open and cool to see in Marrakesh.  You also need decent money to get into places and explore the nightlife if you wanted to.  Food was good overall, tried some of the original dishes and found them a bit bland.  Overall, I will have to visit Morocco again and give it another chance.  For me, it felt like the wrong timing when I arrived and didn’t get what I thought I would get out of it.

However, the people are some of the kindest and always smiling around tourists and anyone exploring their country.

Out of 10:
  • People: 8.3, some of the tourist traps felt overwhelming.
  • Food: 7.0, the local Tajeens and other dishes were good, but nothing that left a great taste.
  • Culture: 8.2, great culture, also a heavy French influence in the region.
  • Landscape: 7.5, beautiful coast, and lots to see in the big metropolitan cities.
  • History: 7.2, didn’t see too much historic landmarks, but has some great places to visit.
  • Affordability: 7.1, a bit expensive for North Africa, but a lot of tourists visit there.
  • Safety: 8.0, felt relatively safe in most places, my female friend did get cat called a few too many times when she was alone.
  • Accommodations: 8.0, felt relatively safe in most places, my female friend did get cat called a few too many times when she was alone.
  • Transport: 7.5, easy to get around from one city to another using the Metro, it is relatively decently priced.
  • Shopping: 5.9, felt a lot of places tried to sell you on little things and had the tourist trap, even at the barber shop.

Overall: 7.32 out of 10. I will have to come again to Morocco and give it another go.
